bsnes will be renamed: hail Higan!
#1
SNES
As the author has pointed out in the official forums, bsnes v0.92 will be renamed to Higan.
The new name is an attempt to clarify the multi-system nature of the bsnes. The emulator can emulate the following systems:
bnes (NES)
bsnes (SNES, Super Game Boy, BS-X Satellaview, Sufami Turbo)
bgbc (Game Boy, Game Boy Color)
bgba (Game Boy Advance)
dasShiny (Nintendo DS)

So the bsnes name was hiding all that functionality. Also for any1 having trouble loading roms in the latest versions of bsnes (like myself Tongue) here are the instructions for rom folders introduced by the evermoving byuu.

Quote:I've chosen higan as the new name for bsnes.

higan (火眼) is inspired from the Tengai Makyou Zero protagonist.
It is also a double entendre for 彼岸, which is a Buddhist holiday celebrating the autumnal equinox.
It is said to represent "the other shore (of the Sanzu river)", meant to represent striving to reach enlightenment.

And the best part of all ... that means we have a theme song now! Big Grin

bsnes v092 and later will be renamed, and the version number will be kept. So the next release will be higan v092.
The repository has been moved and new releases will be found at http://code.google.com/p/higan/

It's been very difficult to rename a project with nearly eight years of name recognition, but the fact was that bsnes did not represent what the project has become any longer.
We attempted to justify this with "byuu's set of nintendo emulated systems", but even this failed to work with the addition of Cydrak's Nintendo DS emulator.

The name bsnes still remains. It is now simply the name of my SNES emulator by itself. higan uses the bsnes core, as well as the Nintendo DS dasShiny core, and so forth.
So higan is now comprised of:
bnes (NES)
bsnes (SNES, Super Game Boy, BS-X Satellaview, Sufami Turbo)
bgbc (Game Boy, Game Boy Color)
bgba (Game Boy Advance)
dasShiny (Nintendo DS)
