32 bit emulator with sonicstage 4.3 installed.

sonicstage is an external program that can be used by jpcsp to help with decoding some sound, but since it's not freeware/opensource its codecs can't be bundled with the emulator, so you have to install it separately.

RE: Disgaea 2 Dark Hero Days ULUS10461 Encrypted - j1234 - 07-16-2011

I have some problems with the game.

1. Sometimes it won't load the rom properly (using Jpcsp 0.6 2021, tried the latest revision 2196 but it won't even play the rom). There's a movie at the start and it's replaced by black&white pixelated noise. Under some settings there's just black screen. Pressing start (Enter) likely solves the issue of having to wait.

2. Sound effects work, but no movie, voice or music.

3. There are small hangs in animation when new skill effects happen, but not when already seen effects occur again. Same hang happens in character dialogue too. Is it possible to pre-load /decrypt these to RAM so that gameplay would be smooth? Or is there some kind of extra activity taking place in the emulator when this happens?

4. Geo effect panels are opaque (solid color). The correct effect is pulsating transparency.

Other than these problems, the game seems to work perfectly.

On side note, where are the savegames stored? I'd like to know so that I could download new version on Jpcsp and still keep playing where I left.

Anyone?

install sonicstage 4.3, then enable it in emulator. options>configuration, media tab (again 32 bit only)

Thanks for reply.
I installed SonicStage 4.3 . I've no idea what it changed in my system, but probably wasn't worth the risk just to listen to music in one game. Music works, but no video still.

Shader implementation of color mask doesn't work without "shaders" enabled and enabling them will cause all sorts of distortions in my screen (Jpcsp 2211)

RE: Disgaea 2 Dark Hero Days ULUS10461 Encrypted - yns88 - 07-25-2011

For me the shader distortion is caused by the lack of color masking, and enabling the color mask fixes the problem (see my previous posts on the subject on page 4). However, I've noticed a framerate drop from the color mask option (only noticeable in the town, battles are still smooth).

Video should be working, though I've found that it works with some settings and not others. I haven't looked at it much. Voice does not work at all yet, and probably won't until SonicStage updates its audio decoding I think.

EDIT: Video works when "Only GE Graphics" is turned off. However, changing the game's resolution (for sharper polygons) only works when "Only GE Graphics" is turned on.

RE: Disgaea 2 Dark Hero Days ULUS10461 Encrypted - Khift - 08-24-2011

Been playing Disgaea 2: DHD for a bit, r2289, and some notes:

- Upon booting, regardless of settings, the intro movie doesn't like to play in r2289 and an error is registered. I was able to get it to play in r2263 provided I did not have 'Only GE Graphics' enabled but in r2289 it fails to play even with no default video options. In both situations it can be skipped by pressing X. Attached is a screenshot of the error.

- Geo Panels, movement range and target range are a solid color. Enabling Shaders (but NOT decoding of indexed textures using CLUT) fixes this, but then makes base panels, mystery gates, court gates and dimensional gates invisible as well as introducing a huge slowdown in town (although not in battle oddly). Color mask was not necessary; just enabling shaders brought on both effects for me. Enabling the decoding of indexed textures using CLUT reverts all the changes shaders brought on.

- Voice acting is missing even with SonicStage installed. However, I get the same exact error as I do in the intro video every time I enter a voiced story scene, sometimes multiple times in a long story scene. This error is not triggered on non-voiced story scenes such as the Dark Court. This gives me some hope that perhaps it's a decryption issue and not a SonicStage issue.

- The game has significant pauses during story scenes -- it'll freeze entirely, animations and all, for a second or longer every handful of lines. At first I thought this was due to the voice acting not being loadable, but then I noticed it occurred in every story scene, even the ones that aren't voiced such as the Dark Court appearances. No error is registered when this happens.

- Really big slowdowns in areas with lots of geo panels. If a map has six colors of geo panels it often gets very slow. This is both with and without shaders; I can't detect much of a difference with it enabled. Probably related to the emulator's poor implementation of ATI video cards, unfortunately. Having lots of characters on the map at once can also bring FPS down, but it seems much more sensitive to geo panels.

Those are my notes. Overall, it's slow, ugly and quiet but definitely playable. Shaders fixes the ugliness issue, but then it turns each map in the item world into a needle in the haystack problem. The slowness would probably be fixed if you have a Nvidia card and not an ATI card like I do.

Also, a question: one of the new classes added in DHD compared to the PS2 version of the game is the Lady Samurai. In order to unlock this class all you need to do is have a save file from Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness on your memory stick; that's all that every FAQ and wiki on the internet says you need to do to unlock it. I do have an AoD save file in my JPCSP folder but the game doesn't seem to be detecting it. I was wondering if anyone playing DHD on JPCSP was able to find a way to get it to do that. The Lady Samurai class looks really sweet and it would be quite nice to have it unlocked.

Edit: Disappearing base panels and gates seems to be caused by a combination of shaders and VAO, another option I've been running. Which is a shame because the game is unplayably slow without VAO enabled; almost every map hits 30 FPS. Looks better, sure, but it doesn't matter if it's so slow it is no longer fun to play.

Well as far as the Crashing goes, I think its R2286? through 2289 have a problem and its best to play with one of the earlier ones for now. I play on R2279 and have no problems. I run with a crappy computer 45-60 FPS except during certain Skills.

And just a possibility but the AoD could be a different region(highly unlikely if you bought them both lol) or you might need completed story...

It's not crashing, actually, just spitting out that error. Been messing around with an earlier build (r2263; already had it installed) and it does not spit out that error.

Also, with regards to the Lady Samurai were you able to get it unlocked? I'm just curious of it's possible. If so, I'll muck around some more and see if I can do it for myself.

Edit: Yep, it was the region issue with the Lady Samurai. Thanks for pointing that out; I didn't even realize the ISO's I had were of different regions.

been having some bugs but nothing i care enough about except one

i cant hear the voices at all which option do i need to check to enable it? or is it currently a problem with dark hero days in general?

looking through the extracted audio files it does not appear that the latest version of the eumlator is outputting the voice files into altrac
it looks like it has the smalle 44kb files that would go along with the voice acting but is not actully outputting the voice acting at all
