You might need more ram everyone should have 4gb nowadays java uses a virtual machine meaning it must use ram, The more ram it has the better for example if you have 2gb of ram and the java -xmx value is at 1024m (default) Java must allocate that much ram, that leaves 1 gig or less for the system (windows 7, open applications, drivers ..etc)
not much room to work with, the skipping sounds could be the system swapping memory to the system pagefile to keep up with the memory demands.

also what sounds are you talking about sound effects like the menus, walking, battle sounds, background music, video audio, voices ..etc?
