But in my case it can freeze very long sometimes forever. And some mecha battle animations like the main character's are just missing (won't continue except you fast forward or skip completely). Is this hardware related problem?

i have exactly the same problem

here my specs

CPU: Q6600 2.4
RAM: DDR2 2GB
VIDEO CARD: GTX 560 ti
OS: Windows 7 32 bits

I'm guessing its the video card or the Ram. probably the ram Because i only have 3 gigs of ram and a crappy video card and it does it to me too.
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 970 3.7 GHz, GPU: Geforce GTX 550 Ti, Ram: 16 GB, Windows 7 64-bit

i have much lower spec , but i still can have animations

may be it is your java runtime has some problem, try update to the latest driver for video card and jre

btw here's my PC spec to play this game. same i too have animations.
or probably you need to reinstall your OS again.

Lol, it's not that I don't have animations at all only that some mecha (so far the original, dancougar nova, getter robo) starting attack animation are missing/won't run. When you say "have animations" do you mean that you have these starting attack animations? Sorry, I'm a bit unclear with the statement.

i'll tested it. i haven't reach stage that has dancougar nova/getter robo.

You could just watch sit at the title screen until it loads the battle cutscene demos... It stops playing for me after the 3rd one

may be the iso file is damaged, just guess
i will try load the demo screen later, but i remember it is ok for my pc
